Objective: To investigate the effect of sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata) extract on urine volume, electrolytes and uric acid. Method: For urine volume and electrolyte (sodium and potassium) investigations, the animals (n = 18) were randomly assigned to six treatment groups. Control; I given urea 1 g/kg orally plus normal saline 5 ml/100g; Test II-V given normal saline 5 ml/100g plus extract: 15 mg, 18 mg, 21mg, 30 mg, 45mg and 62 mg. Animals were fasted for 24 hours and were selected based on individual ability to excrete 40% of a water load 95 ml/100g orally) within two hours. urine volume was collected 24 hourly and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) measured using an Ion Selective Electrode method. For the uric acid investigation, the animals (n = 8) were randomly selected and divided into two groups of four (male and female). Group I was given water (control). Group II was given extract 15, 65, 115 mg, orally. Uric acid level in urine was measured spectrophotometrically. (AU)....
