The Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Serum Ferritin Concentration at Booking to Haemoglobin Concentration Throughout Pregnancy and Fetal Outcome

Objective: To determine if the relationship of the Body Mass Index (BMI) and serrum ferritin recorded in the first trimester influences subsequent haemoglobin concentration and fetal outcome. Method: One hundred and thirty primigravid pregnant women ages 15-25 years attending the antenatal clinic at the University Hospital of the West Indies were studied. Their heights and weights were recorded and BMIs calculate; five millilitres of venous blood was obtained from each subject for the determination of haemoglobin and serum ferritin concentration. The haemoglobin concentration was measured in trimesters one, two and three. Fetal outcome was assessed by birthweight and gestational age.
