The Effect of Oestrogen on Discriminative Learning and Memory in Aged Male and Female Rats

Objective: To compare the relative effects of oestrogen on configural discriminative learning and memory in aged male and female rats. Method: Eighteen 30 month- old male rats were assigned to three treatment groups (group, n = 6), viz: oestradiol, anastrozole (an aromatase inhibitor) and oil; and compared with non-treated aged male (n = 12) and female (n = 12) controls. Animals were trained in an operant system, utilizing a negativ patterning discriminative learning task. Rats learned to press a lever when a single stimulus (light or tone ) was presented and avoid pressing when both stimuli were simultaneously presented. upon attainment of 75& correct performance rate, controls were either orchidectomized or ovariectomized.
