Abstract
The presentation examined factors that influence substance abuse treatment retention. Retention is defined as the length of time patients remain in treatment, and attrition is defined as premature termination of treatment. Studies on retention in substance use treatment have primarily evaluated three major focus areas: characteristics of patients, effects relating to the drug of dependence and programme characteristics.
