Knowledge, Perception and Practice of Healthcare Professionals Toward Pain in Neonates at Tertiary Level Hospitals in Kingston, Jamaica [Abstract]

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, perception and practices of health care workers toward pein in neonates at tertiary level hospitals in Kingston. Method: Self-administered questionnaires were used to abtain demographic data from physicians and nurses providing neonatal care at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Victoria Jubilee Hospital and the University Hospital of the West Indies. Knowledge and practice were evaluated using a 21-item assessment tool. Mean scores were compared using independent t test or analysis of variance. Chi-square tests were used to determine factors associated with achievement of minimum competence. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate deficiency in practice out of proportion to the deficiency in knowledge and perception of healthcare workers with regards to neonatal pain and its management. There is a clear need for continuing education of healthcare workers and the institution of local policies and protocols that will influence practice.....
