Factors Determining the Readiness for HIV Testing in Women of Reproductive Age Group in Westmoreland: a Theory-Based Approach [Abstract]

Objective: To determine the readiness for HIV testing among women of reproductive age (16 to 45 years) in Westmoreland an dfactors influencing this behaviour change using the Trans theoretical model. Method: A structured interview-assisted questionnaire was administred to 372 respondents in the urban and rural areas of Westmoreland. Two focus group discussions were conducted with women of the same target group. For analytical purposes, respondents were classified into those previously tested and those not previously tested and then further subdivided into pregnant and non-pregnant women. Conclusions: Self-efficacy and risk perception is evidently lacking as the majority of women were unable to maintain the testing behaviour and did not recognize its importance in the absenc of pregnancy. Interventions targeting women in a union and older than 25 years will aid in the uptake of testing. Counselling may improve self-efficacy, promote maintenanc and is felt need of the women.....
