Sexual Behaviour Among Adolescents in Jamaica [Abstract]

Objective: This study seeks to determine and identify factors associated with high-risk sexual behaviour among adolescents in Jamaica. Method: The study utilised data collected in a cross sectional study of adolescents 10 to 18 years old, in schools in 19 Caribbean countries by Pan American Health Organization. In Jamaica, a randomised cluster sample consisting 2 635 students was chosen. An 87-item forced choice questionnaire was administered. using variate, bi-variate and multi-variate analysis, the relationship between sexual behaviour and a number of socio-demographic variables was examined. This was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences SPSS version 11. Conclusion: While age and gender were important factors associated with sexual activity, psycho-emotional factors such as relationship with teacher, a caring mother, problems with a parent or parents who drink and sexual abuse, as well as attendance at religious services were also of significance.....
