Diffusible betalactamase from Enterobacter cloacae [Abstract]

Objective: An in Vitro diffusion model was devise to detect production of extra-cellular beta-lactamase by E cloacae. Method: Pure culture of a clinical laboratory isolate of E cloacae eas obtained repeated susceptibility testing of this isolate showed stable and high-level resistance to third generation cephalosporins. After overnight growth at 37o C, 5ml of this isolate in broth culture was added to a central well made in an agar plate. The agar had been surfaced-seeded with a control strain of Escherichia coli (NTCC 27434, susceptible to Amoxicillin and to amoxicillin with clavultanate). Discs containing 10 and 20/10 mgm of these antibiotics were placed on the agar surface 4 and 8 mm (respectively) from the edge of the well. After further overnight incubation, the zones of inhibition of growth around the discs containing antibiotics were inspected. Conclusion: Th emodel detects diffusible beta-lactamase from E cloacae.....
