With the growing number of patients with Acquired Immunedeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and other immunodeficiency disorders, there has been a marked increase of invasive fungal infections in the past 2 decades. At the University Hospital of the West Indies (A 512 bed tertiary care teaching hospital) in Kingston, Jamaica, we have been encountering a large number of Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis in recent years. In this report, we examine the incidence and characteristics of patients with cryptococcus neoformans meningitis in 5 years between 1999 and 2003 and compare the data with the observed 30 years ago (1972-76) in this hospital.....
