Abstract
Gantamicin remains an important front-line aminoglycoside in the therapy of gram-negative infections. The incidence of gantamicin resistance varies in different areas and largely is related to the trend of usage of the compound. This report examines the prevalence of genatamicin resistance in 786 gram negative bacilli comprising 279 E. Coili, 240 Klebsiella, 178 Enterobacter and 89 Proteus mirabilis encountered from various clinical specimens between April and August 1996 at the University Hospital of the West Indies, (a 512 bed tertiary care teaching hospital) in Kingston, Jamaica and compares the data with the results of a similar study conducted in 1981 in this institution.....
