Abstract
Objective: To determine and analyze penicillin MICs in strains of streptococcus pneumoniae encountered in patients at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), Kingston, Jamaica. Design and Methods: Eighty-one isolates (single isolates from a patient) encountered between January and December, 2000, were included in the study. The isolates were identified by routine methodology and MICs were determined by E test (AB Biodisk, Solina, Sweden) using streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619 as control. Conclusion: Compared to data from many parts of the world, penicillin resistance in pneumococci continues to remain low at UHWI. Over 80% of all isolates and 94% from blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were susceptible in this study. The current low level of resistance in Jamaica should not lead to complacency. Periodic surveillance and monitoring of the trend are vital.....
