Objective: To determine the prevalence of coagulase negativ staphylococci (CoNS) in blood cultures at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Method: Fourteen plants were chosen for th estudy, based on a previous survey that investigated poly-pharmacy practices in Jamaica. Decoctions or juices of these plants were prepared according to commonly used recipes and their inhibitory properties examined on previously prepared rat liver microsomes and recombinant human enzymes expressed in bacterial membranes. Fluorescence spectrophotometry was used to monitor the generation of the metabolites from their fluorigenic subtrates AMMC*and 7BQ* for CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, respectively, and the reaction rates determined. Conclusion: The Study revealed that CoNS is the leading bacterial isolate in blood cultures at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). The prevalence of the CoNS at the UHWI is comparable to that reported from institutions in the developed world.....
