Abstract
Objective: To determine the occurence and pathogenicity of free-living amoebae of the genus Acanthamoeba in water sources associated with human activities in Jamaica. Design and Methods: Tap, sea and river water samples were collected from across Jamaicaand identification of Acanthamoeba was based on the morphology of cyst and trophozoite forms and PCR amplification with a genus specific primer pair. Pathogenic potential of isolates was characterized using temperature and osmotolerance assays and PCR reactions with two primer pairs specific to Acanthamoeba pathogenesis.....
