Objective: This study was undertaken to investigate the epidemiology of strains of coagulase negative staphylococci isolated from blood cultures at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), specifically to determine their prevalence, distribution in the different hospital facilities and susceptibility patterns. Design and Method: Over a six-month period in 2003, a prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 3001 blood samples received from 2363 patients at the different facilities of the hospital. Both standard and automated microbiological procedures were used to study these blood culture samples. Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that coagulase negative staphylococci are the leading bacterial isolate from blood cultures at the UWI. Staphylococcus epidermidis is the predominant species of coagulase negative staphylococci isolated. There is no vancomycin resistance in coagulase nagative staphylococci in this hospital.....
