Tetanus - going but not gone! preventive strategies revisited [Abstract]

Objectives: Tetanus is now a rare disease in the developed world. though preventable, it is still fairly frequent in underdeveloped countries and has a high mortality. The objective of this study is to evaluate the epidemiological profile of patients with tetanus admitted to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) and to identify high risk groups for preventative strategies. Methods: The medical record of all case of tetanus admitted to the UHWI between June 1993 - June 2003 were reviewed. The following data were retrieved: age, gender, grade of severity (Table 1 Albert Classification), duration in hospital and ICU stay and outcome. Information was cross correlated with reported cases from the Ministry of Health.....
