Nutritional status, self-care practices and glycaemic control in adults with diabetes mellitus [Abstract]

Objective: To determine the nutritional status and self-care practices in relation to glycaemic control in adults with diabetes mellitus (DM) attending the Specialist Diabetes Clinic (SDC), University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Method: A pre-tested interview schedule was administered to 98 women and 35 men randomly selected from a population (n = 510) of patients with diabetes mellitus attending the SDC, UHWI. Waist circumferences (WC), heights and weights were measured . hbA1c was used as the index of glucose control. Self-care practices scores indicated the extent of compliance with appropriate lifestyle practices. Respondents were asked to recall their usual 24-hour dietary intake and the quantity of sugar in food and beverages estimated.
