Objective: To identify factors that influence caregivers to access Emergency Department (ED) services at Bustamante Hospital for Children for non urgent illnesses. Method: Caregivers of 250 non-urgent cases were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Theory of Reasoned Action' (TRA) constructs were included to determine the influence of attitude and subjective norms on caregiver intention, which is the major predictor of behaviour. In-depth inteviews were conducted with care providers from the ED and the Paediatric primary Care Facility. Conclusions: While education is important,provision of an acceptable paediatric primary care service is essential to reduce inappropriate visits to the ED.....
