Abstract
Objective: To identify how illness is culturally constructed and explore the affects of this construction on the selection of health care options in a rural Jamaican community. Methods: This paper is derived from data gathered in a rural community in Jamaica, using ethnographic methods. The data were collected through unstructured interviews and recorded on audiotapes, which were transcribed and analyzed using Microsoft Word. The study was longitudinal and lasted between 1993 and 1999. During the period of data gathering consent was sought from all participants using process consent, an established method is anthropology.
