Bile Duct Injuries in the Laparoscopic Era: the University Hospital of the West Indies Experience [Abstract]

Objective: To assess the prevalence, nature, treatment and outcome of bile duct injuries seen at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) since the intyroduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Design and Method: A retrospective study was conducted using the case notes of all the patients seen at the UHWI with a diagnosis of bile duct injury during the period of July 1994 to June 2004. The patients were identified using the Department of Surgery audit database and the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) audit database. Information extracted included demographics, indication for cholecystectomy, nature and timing of discovery of injury, treatment offered and outcome.....
