Background and Objectives: Leptospirosis in Jamaica is an under-reported endemic disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to survey the seroprevalence rates and epidemiological trend of human leptopirosis in Jamaica. Design and Methods: All serological confirmed human cases or leptospirosis that occured in Jamaica between 1992 and 2002 and recorded at the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Services Division, McDonnough Diagnostic Laboratory, Jamaica, were reviewed. Leptospiral antibodies were detected using the reference serological test, the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), using six leptospira antigens. A sample was positive if the MAT titre was ³ 1:100. Conclusion: The findings of this study provide valuable information for developing and accurate indication of the seroprevalence and epidemiological trend of leptospirosis in Jamaica, and suggest that persons may be at risk for leptospiral infection.....
