Objective: To identify and explore the factors affecting the educational environment at the University of the West Indies Medical School at Mona, as perceived by students. Method: The Dundee Ready Education Measure (DREEM), a 50 item- inventory designed to measure the quality of the educational environment for the health professions was self-administered and completed anonymously, by second (Y2) through fifth year (Y5) medical students registered in the FMS, Mona, in April 2004. The inventory provided measures of students' perceptions of learning, teachers, atmosphere, their academic performance, and social life, which were scored as subscales. Statistical analysis included calculating frequencies, means and standard deviations; a p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Conclusions: The overall score suggests that the environment is viewed with some ambivalence by the students and as such needs to be improved. Although students perceive teachers to be 'moving in the right direction' , curriculum managers must strive to identify strategies that continually improve the student -centeredness and student-friendliness of the educational environment.....
