Reports on a symposium held in honour of Professor Richard Olmsted past Professor and Chair of Paediatrics (Child Health), The University of the West Indies UWI Mona Campus and Paediatric Psychiatrist, the University of Oregon Medical School, USA, and Specialist in Communication Defects. Several of his doctoral students paid tribute to this distinguished gentleman in a unique mini- symposium which was held at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, the University of the West Indies, Mona, on Tuesday, January 27, 2004. Richard Williams Olmsted was born in Connecticut, USA and graduated from the Harvard Medical School, completed his residency at the Grace (Yale) New Haven Community Hospital in Connecticut and has held several distinguished posts throughout his academic career. His main research interests were in speech and hearing defects of childhood and has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters including the famous ' Nelson's Textbook of Paediatrics'. Professor Owen Morgan Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI thanked him for showing how to deliver expert pediatric healthcare when resources were scarce and for bringing to light 'Child Abuse and Neglect' in Jamaica. Although retired from full time paediatrics for many years he still continues his academic pursuits in many and varied areas: Editor Dorenbrecher Medical Journal, member of the Board of Trustees for the Dorenbrecher Children's Hospital in Portland Oregon where he tries to attend and participate in weekly Paediatric grand rounds, author of 'A Smile A day Keeps the Doctor Away'.....
