Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in Sickle Cell Disease [Abstract]

Objective: To determine the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB), defined as ³ 105 colony forming units in one milliliter of urine in the absence of symptoms of a urinary tract infection, in a cohort of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) attending the Sickle Cell Clinic in Kingston, Jamaica. Methods: A mid stream urine sample was collected from 266 patients for urinalysis and culture and sensitivity analysis. Proteinuria was measured by urine dipstick and blood sample was taken for measuring serum creatinine. Individuals with abnormal urine culture results were recalled for a repeat urine culture and were treated with appropriate antibiotics.....
