Abstract
Collaboration between researchers (usually located at the university) and teachers has generated renewed interest among researchers and educators. This collaboration in the service of research has been undertaken for a variety of purposes - to let theory inform practice, to help teachers pay more attention to their work, or to test or develop teaching learning materials. In 1996 lecturers at the University of the West Indies embarked on a collaborative research project to improve college teaching making it more reflective of the principles of teaching and learning which lecturers advocated. As a preparation for this collaboration, lecturers at the University also had to learn to collaborate and agree on fundamental issues of the project.
