Abstract
Examines how the falling demand for sugar in the nineteenth century led to changes in the pattern of sugar plantations in Jamaica. Sugar production became more concentrated in the western and southern parishes. Elsewhere, sugar estates shifted their emphasis to more profitable areas like bananas and cattle.
