Abstract
Alumni Relations at The University of the West Indies has, over the years, been a rather ill-defined area of responsibility. The University has proceeded unremittingly with its mission of 'unlocking West Indian potential' without paying much attention to continuity through structured and formal links with its major stakeholders, alumni. This shortsightedness has created a gap in institutional/alumni relations, particularly with younger alumni and those who live in the non-campus countries. The present paper outlines how the University, since 1999, has attempted to mend this and the difficulties in so doing. To judge the University's efforts and success so far, it draws on trends in alumni relations in the USA and elsewhere, also pointing out the many internal impediments and challenges that threaten the process. The paper, however, concludes with the optimistic note that commitment from within and a 'managed' loyalty from outside will win the day for Alumni Relations - and The University of the West Indies.....
