Abstract
The study highlights the results of an analysis of the effects of financial instability on the performance of financial sector intermediation in Jamaica. Before-after and with-without counterfactual methodologies were used to indicate that financial sector intermediation in all channels through which the financial sector is expected to foster economic growth, caused an increase in already high levels of operational inefficiency of some types of financial institutions, and ultimately negatively impacted on real sector economic performance.
