Kever EDX - 771 energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used for the analysis of phosphorus in agriculture soils and crops collected from central Jamaica. Phosphorus in soils was calibrated using 48 soil samples previously analyzed by Geological Survey. Phosphorus in plants was calibrated using 14 yams samples analyzed by a colorimetric method. The measurement conditions were: Ti secondary target operated at 3.0mA/15 kV for yams and 3.0mA/10kV for soils and acquisitions time of 300 sec. The quality control of calibrations was performed using six soils Standard Reference Materials (SRM) form NIST and the IAEA SRM-336. A total of 250 soils and 60 yams samples were analyzed and used to produce geochemical distribution maps. The turnaround time for analysis of phosphorus is 15-10 minutes per samples. The method could be recommended for quick analysis and management of phosphorus in agricultural soils and crops.....
