Abstract
This review has been conducted within the framework of a global United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Review of Universities’ Response to HIV/AIDS. The rationale for such a study stems from the awareness that 'HIV/AIDS is placing enormous challenges on the higher education sector by weakening demand for and access to education, depleting institutional and human capacity, reducing availability of financial resources for the sector, and impeding the delivery of quality education.' The objective is to identify and then analyse promising approaches taken by higher education institutions worldwide to address the epidemic with a view to draw on these experiences to 'formulate recommendations for higher education institutions to respond sensitively, appropriately, and effectively to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.' This report looks at the national context of HIV/AIDS and reports findings from a qualitative survey undertaken from April 24-29, 2005 in Port-au-Prince at the Université d’État d’Haďti, a public institution established in 1920 and Université Quisqueya, a private institution established in 1988. ....
