Abstract
Challenges the view of writers who suggest that 'no country can have a national policy to promote the English language and retain a vibrant culture untainted by the beliefs and orthodoxies which govern English society'. Argues that this is not the case in the Caribbean, deals with 'the question of how an ex-colony continues to use English as its official language and still maintains its linguistic integrity'. The issue is discussed with specific reference to Jamaica where the society 'has managed to keep English in its place'.....
