Abstract
Five Jamaican plant extracts - Hyptis verticillata, Lantana camera, Lippia alba, Ocimum micranthum and Ocimum basilicum - were toxic to the following gram positive bacteria: Streptococcus Groups A, B and D; Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. The extracts were not active against the following E. coli strains: 0111, 0119, and 1046. No activity was observed for the two species of salmonella used. Extracts of L. camera, O. basilicum and O. micranthum showed the same degree of toxicity to the gram positive pathogens at 400 mg/mL; O. basilicum was the most active, inhibiting bacterial growth at the lowest concentration tested (130 mg/mL)....
