Abstract
Aims to look at 'how school is learnt in a number of different settings where English is taught; exploring the role of the teacher, teachers' culture and beliefs about language use and how they function in delineating context, thus acting as a conduit between the school and society'. Examines the effect on Jamaican students of cultural differences found in classrooms in Jamaica and London; and points to the need for 'common cultural understandings about how schools work in particular contexts and a common language or common understandings about language to make the communication and the adjustment possible'.....
