Abstract
'Reclaiming the old vulgarity (and legitimacy) of a democratizing ideology of popular taste, this paper argues for a looser, more inclusive definition of what constitutes 'good taste' and, by extension, the critical 'faculty of perceiving and enjoying what is excellent in art, literature and the like.' This revisionist project thus redefines the appropriate subjects of scholarship. But the paper simultaneously, and somewhat subversively, argues against the academy as the exclusive locus of intellectual enquiry.'....
