Abstract
BACKGROUND: Massive lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage resulting from a fistular communication between an internal iliac artery aneurysm and colon is a rare occurrence. Early diagnosis and treatment is difficult because of the anatomical location of these aneurysms and only made when they become significantly enlarged. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: Herein we report the case of a 68-year-old man with no previous symptoms who presented with massive haematochezia. Prompt ligation of the internal iliac artery resulted in salvage of the patient. CONCLUSIONS: Rupture of an iliac artery aneurysm with arterio-colic fistula is a rare cause of massive lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Early recognition and aggressive management are required to avoid significant morbidity and mortality.....
