Building students' confidence: Ability and achievement expectations

Identifies and discusses research that has focused on two goal orientations in learning situations - performance goals and learning goals. Notes that competitive learning environments, where performance goals predominate, benefit only the high achiever and can damage the learning disposition, confidence, and achievement of the student who is not doing well or who lacks confidence. On the other hand, 'in a non-competitive environment where students work collaboratively or individually and where learning goals are emphasized, students persist and seek challenge whether or not they have high ability or have confidence in their ability'. Points to the importance of this research for classroom teachers and teacher educators given the critical role that teachers' expectations play in student achievement.....
