Abstract
Loss of crops due to fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases can have a large impact on human food supplies and local economies, as well as on the social stability of rural communities. It is conservatively estimated that diseases, insects, and weeds together cause 3040% loss of all crops worldwide [1]. Annual losses worldwide due to plant diseases are estimated to ~14% of total losses and about $220 billion. In addition, the need for measures to control diseases limits the acreage of land available for cultivation, restricts the crops that can be grown in fields already contaminated with certain pathogens and necessitates the use of agrochemicals for treating seeds, fumigating soils, spraying plants, and applying fruit postharvest treatments.
